3. High Point State Park / New Jersey 9-4-05 (Memorial Day Weekend)
Left home in Jackson, NJ to meet up with fellow co-worker in Sayreville. Took 287 N to Rt.78 W and got off exit 3 and took 22 N to Rt.519 N. Stopped in Buttzville at Hot Dog Johnny's on Rt.46 for a little snack and a break. Then continued north on Rt.519 N which is a very nice road that goes through a lot of farmland with many rolling hills. And then ends at Rt.23 in Highpoint. Went to Highpoint State Park and checked out the view from the observation deck. Then had lunch in Sussex at the Sussex Inn which has excellent food. From there back to Sayreville. Weather for the day was the best anyone could ask for, it was 80 degrees and completely clear with no humidity. This time the ride completed with no mishaps. My co-worker Fred was accompanied by his wife Renee. And Traveling with me was my girlfriend Courtney.

4. 7 Covered Bridges Tour / Allentown, PA. 9-18-05
1. Bogert's Bridge
A good reference point for starting
the tour is Centre Square, 7th St. Hamilton St., Allentown. Drive south on
7th St. two blocks to Union St. Turn left block to Lehigh St. and turn right.
Proceed on Lehigh St. to first traffic light and turn right. *Continue on Martin
Luther King Jr. Dr. for 2.2 miles to second traffic light. Turn left on 24th St.
(Oxford Dr.) and proceed 1.1 miles to Bogert's Bridge. Turn left onto Lehigh
Parkway to view the bridge closely.
Built in 1841, Bogert's Bridge is one of the oldest in the area and one of the
oldest in the nation. Local residents saved it from demolition in 1956 when it
was damaged by a truck. It spans the Little Lehigh River and is now used for
foot traffic only. Its single span is 145 feet long.
* This portion of the tour has several "Detour" signs
2. Guth's Bridge
Turn right to exit Lehigh Parkway. Pass
over Oxford Dr. to Fish Hatchery Rd. Continue on Fish Hatchery Rd. to Rt. 29
(Cedar Crest Blvd.) at top of hill. Turn right and follow Cedar Crest past I-78,
Hamilton Blvd. and U.S. 22 interchanges. Cross Walbert Ave. at traffic light
after U.S. 22 and Huckleberry Rd. at top of hill. Turn left onto Iron Bridge Rd.
before crossing concrete bridge at bottom of hill. Proceed to Guth's Bridge.
Manasses Guth Bridge, and the following four on the tour, all span the Jordan
Creek. The Guth Bridge was built in 1858 and has the characteristic stone
parapets and a road bed made of double planks of wood. Its single span is 120
feet long.
3. Wehr's Bridge
Turn right through Guth's Bridge, then take first left onto River Rd. to Wehr's
Bridge. This bridge is located in Covered Bridge Park in South Whitehall
Township, where it crosses the Jordan River. Built in the same year as Bogert's
Bridge, Wehr's Bridge, also known as Sieger's Bridge, shares it claim to
antiquity. It is 140' long, single span, with stone parapets and double wood
floor.
4. Rex's Bridge
Turn right, take left at Limekiln Rd., continue to Rt. 309 and turn right. At
traffic light in Orefield turn left onto Kernsville Rd., proceed for 1 mile to
Jordan Rd. (the first road on the right beyond Iron Bridge), and turn right.
Follow Jordan Rd. to Rex's Bridge.
With its 150-foot span, Rex's Bridge is the longest bridge in the Lehigh Valley.
It was built in 1858 and has stone parapets and double wood floor.
5. Geiger's Bridge
Drive through Rex's Bridge, then proceed one mile. At junction of Rhuenton Hill
Rd., bear right on Jordan Rd. and proceed one mile to Geiger's Bridge.
Built in 1858, the same year as Rex's Bridge and Manasses Guth Bridge, Geiger's
Bridge too has stone parapets and a double wood floor. The structure is 120 feet
long, single span.
6. Schlicher's Bridge
Return to Rhueton Hill Rd., and take a hard right. Proceed up hill for 2/10
mile; tour route continues down hill onto macadam road, where the tour bears
right. Continue past entrance to Game Preserve through Schlicher's Bridge to Rt.
309.
Located near the Trexler-Lehigh County Game Preserve, Schlicher's Bridge is the
shortest (108 feet long) and the newest (built in 1882) bridge on the tour. The
single span structure crosses the Jordan Creek.
7. Kreidersville's Bridge
Drive through Schlicher's Bridge to Rt. 309. Turn right onto Rt. 309, proceed to
the center of Schnecksville. Turn left at traffic light onto Sand Springs Rd.
Continue to Ironton, and turn left on Mauch Chunk Rd. (Main St.). Proceed to
Ballietsville; turn right onto Rt. 329. Continue to Northampton; at traffic
light on Main Street turn left; proceed 2 miles to Kreidersville; continue
through intersection (four-way stop); 3/10 miles turn right to bridge.
The only remaining covered bridge is Northampton County is that crossing the
Hokendauqua Creek, one half mile north of the village of Kreidersville. It was
built in 1839 and has been restored, but is closed to vehicular traffic in order
to preserve it. The county maintains the bridge today.
The Kreidersville Bridge, 116 feet long and of one span, is of the Burr
construction with a curved truss support. It was originally called Hummel's
Bridge and then Solt's Bridge, both names taken from an old grist mill one
hundred yard distant from it.
Return
Reverse these instructions back to Rt. 329, through Northampton. Turn left on
Rt. 145 and proceed back to Center Square, Allentown.
